CarePath: Trauma-informed leaving care support empowering public authorities and professionals

About This Course

The MOOC focuses on the psychological, juridical/legal and scientific research dimensions. The modules are dedicated to an in-depth analysis of TIC; they are divided into sections organized in line with a multi-dimensional perspective with a focus on the political and organizational components involved in the TIC model. It is free to all participants around the world.

Module 1 – Trauma Care: to know, to do, to be in order to protect and promote children and operators rights, wellbeing and resilience

Module 1 of the CarePath Project online course is offering to different professionals and to anyone interested in issues related to trauma - coming from different nations that are protecting and promoting the rights and welfare of traumatized children - the opportunity to have easy access to updated scientific knowledge about the most effective and efficient ways to support  and empower traumatized children, avoiding at the same time the risks of clients retraumatization and the vicarious trauma of professionals.

 Module 2 – Trauma- Informed Care (TIC) in Research

A relevant section of the training course will focus on TIC research issues. In particular, the fundamental elements of research projects will be presented with a view dedicated to methodological aspects, role of evidence-based approach, critical elements and challenges at an application level, the relevance of the structuring projects scientifically based on both the evaluation and proposal of policies at the international level. A special focus will be dedicated to the action research and to observation and indicators with particular reference to trauma in children. 

The main competences that learners will acquire concern the ability to look critically at the practices both of intervention and, specifically, of research. Awareness of the relevance of the planning phase will encourage participants to maintain a multidisciplinary look that allows an approach to the complex dimension of intervention in the field of mental health.

Module 3 – Legal framework and fundamental legal principles within which the Trauma Informed Care (TIC) approach can be applied

Module 3 aims to provide basic knowledge on the legal framework and on principles within which the Trauma Informed Care (TIC) can be applied.

In this perspective, after presenting the cultural and legal process that led to the recognition of children's rights at a global and European level, we illustrate the fundamental rights and principles established by the international and European legal framework in force, within which the Trauma Informed Care (TIC) can be applied and describe the legal instruments that guarantee the participation of traumatized children in decisions and proceedings (administrative and judicial) affecting them.

Finally, the module examines the operational effects on social and health policies of the approach based on the rights of the child and on the rights of participation of children and young adults.

Training materials include law and legal documents presented along with video pills from university professors, expert video testimonials, but also referrals to external videos and movie trailers.

Module 4 – Final Assignment

Module 4 - of the training course aims to allow participants to consolidate and critically use the knowledge learned in the previous sections. It takes the form of a final assignment and consists in reflecting, starting from a scenario, on a situation of abuse / maltreatment on a child and, therefore, on a traumatic condition in the light of the core principles of the Trauma Informed Care. The final goal is to encourage a personal reflection that combines a multidimensional reading (with the adoption of psychological, legal and scientific research perspectives) both of the situation and of the possible intervention that are effective in promoting and protecting of children rights, prevent retraumatization, support and promote their resilience and their growth and support their empowerment
